Common Signs of Gingivitis

Common Signs of Gingivitis

Gingivitis often goes unnoticed since the signs of gingivitis  may not be very obvious. Most people with gingivitis don’t experience much pain and may not even be aware they have gingivitis unless their dentist informs them. Because the signs of gingivitis are so subtle, it’s important to focus on good oral hygiene and keep a close watch on your gums and oral health.

What Are the Signs of Gingivitis?

  • Chronic bad breath
  • Tender, swollen or red gums
  • Unexplained, lasting bad taste in your mouth
  • Bleeding during brushing or flossing (1)
Even if you don’t notice any signs of gingivitis, you may still have it. Be sure to visit your dentist twice a year for professional cleanings and exams, where your dental professional will look for subtle signs of gingivitis that you may not be able to see.

If left untreated, gingivitis can progress to a more serious form of gum disease called periodontal disease. This can lead to tooth loss and other complications, and has even been associated with serious health conditions such as heart disease and stroke. (2) By keeping a close watch out for signs of gingivitis, you'll be taking an important step toward keeping your gums, teeth, and the rest of your body healthy.
