Preventing Gum Bleeding
Have you ever flossed your teeth and wondered, “Why are my gums bleeding when I floss?” If you notice gum bleeding, it's most likely a sign that your gums are not in good health and you may have gum disease.Gum bleeding is actually quite prevalent in Americans, as is the incidence of early gum disease. In fact, approximately one in every two adult Americans suffers from mild gum disease , also known as gingivitis. (1)
How to Prevent Gum Bleeding
Take proper care of your teeth and gums to help prevent gum bleeding. Here are some oral hygiene tips that will help you keep your teeth healthy and help prevent gum bleeding:• Brush Often and Properly: To help avoid gum bleeding, don’t brush too vigorously, and use a gentle, circular motion rather than a back-and-forth motion. (1) Be sure to brush at least twice a day or after every meal.
• Floss Regularly: Flossing removes the food particles that linger in between your teeth and can lead to plaque build-up that can cause gum bleeding. Take a few minutes every day to make flossing a priority.
• Avoid Tobacco: Tobacco use can damage your gums, and can also make you far more likely to develop gum disease. (1)
• Visit Your Dentist: You should visit your dentist for a professional cleaning and dental exam at least twice in a year. This can help prevent early gum disease from progressing into more serious gum disease.
Following these simple guidelines can help prevent gum bleeding and help keep your teeth and mouth in great health.
